The Minnesota United advanced to the round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday (5/9) in one of the most exciting games ever at Allianz Field.
After the United moved ahead 2-0 in the 73rd minute on a Joseph Rosalas goal, the Philadelphia Union tied it up 2-2 in the final seconds of regular time. In extra time, Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored his second goal of the game put the United ahead 3-2 in the 103rd minute. Philadelphia scored in the final minutes to knot it up at 3-3 and force penalty kicks. The Loons advanced when goaltender Clint Irwin made a save in the eighth round of kicks.
The United’s next game is Saturday (5/13) at Kansas City, and will play next at home on Wednesday night (5/17) again Houston.
