While their new single "Whiskey Hangover" is red-hot at radio, GODSMACK won't even start recording their next full album until they wrap up their run on the Crue Fest 2 tour. However, singer SULLY ERNA's first solo album is pretty much finished. In fact, Erna had the entire record mixed and mastered and was preparing it for a fall release. Those plans changed, however, when he was approached to record a song for next year's SYLVESTER STALLONE blockbuster The Expendables, which will also feature JASON STAHAM, JET LI, MICKEY ROURKE, RANDY COUTURE and even a brief appearance by California Governor ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER.
Erna says a friend of his who's also one of the editors on the film heard his solo material and thought it would be appropriate for the movie. He recalls, quote, "He called me up when Stallone was looking for some music and asked," so Erna says he "went and kind of custom tailored a song for what he wanted for this certain scene in the movie."
The result is a track called "Sinner's Prayer," and apparently Sly liked what he heard. Sully's just about to finish mixing the track and has pushed back the release of the album to coincide with the film's release, which is expected early next year. He explains, "we're gonna push it back and try and tie it into the movie and do all that stuff."
That could have Erna's solo album coming out right around the same time as Godsmack's record, which is expected in the first or second quarter of 2010. Don't worry -- the singer assures fans the two will sound completely different. He says, "The solo record isn't a rock record. So I don't think it'll be treated that way." On the contrary, he says his solo material is "almost in a world music fashion."
Well, whatever it is, it's apparently good enough for Stallone.
